A Social Enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human & environmental well-being, rather than maximizing profits for external shareholders.
Lydia’s Purse International is a social enterprise of MaryannDesigns, ltd. Founder, Maryann Wohlwend, partners her for-profit business with non-profit rescue missions to provide women spiritual discipleship through sewing & design skills training, giving HOPE to break the cycle of generational poverty. Social enterprises differ from commercial enterprises in that, inversely, we do not aim to offer any benefit to investors, except where they believe that doing so will ultimately further their capacity to realize their social & environmental goals. In the US the term is associated with “doing charity BY doing trade”, rather than, “doing charity WHILE doing trade”. Social enterprises, like Lydia’s Purse are differentiated from a profit focused enterprise through transparent evidence that our social aims are primary, and that profits are secondary.
Lydia’s Purse International currently offers programs at The Haven of Rest Homeless Mission’s Harvest Home for Women in Akron, Ohio, USA & in Morogoro, Tanzania, AFRICA.
