“Beyond knowledge gained through biblical study, understanding gleaned from pastoral teaching, & discernment given by The Holy Spirit, BCI’s training opens the door to wisdom: confidence to handle the Word of God correctly & competence to counsel others. The statement, right thinking leads to right feeling, transformed my whole perspective on life, and I refer to it as Biblical Counseling 101. When we consciously evaluate our circumstances, ordering our priorities & daily responsibilities in light of God’s Truth, transformation can happen very quickly. Counselees do not wallow in the emotional pool of their pain, as biblical counselors effectively engage their intellect, pulling them up onto a solid foundation of faith. Hope & healing may require only a few sessions or a couple of months. The biblical counseling process builds up the counselee. The counselor gives hope through personal testimonies & power of God’s Word and encourages the counselee to acknowledge personal sins to put-off, and Christ-like living to put-on through personalized homework. The counselor depends on The Holy Spirit, ‘The Wonderful Counselor’ Jesus said He would leave to his followers, to discern God’s best course of action. The reason I believe in biblical counseling is that we live in a fallen world, and people have real hurts that require real help, and that, ultimately, because we believers are the body of Christ, His church. ‘God has put the body together, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. We are the body of Christ, and each one of us is a part of it.’ (1Corinthians 12) Therefore, ‘we believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ and His church, and that we ought to manifest that unity wherever and whenever possible.’ (from BCI’s Statement of Faith).” -Maryann Wohlwend
